Designing for the offshore future

During my internship at Saltwater, I worked on designing an autonomous inspection vessel for offshore cables. From research to concept development and analyses, the project offered significant technical depth. The combination of challenge, collaboration, and an open working environment made it a valuable learning experience with a strong final result.

During my studies in Maritime Engineering at Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences, I wanted to further explore the world of work vessels and offshore applications. Through previous encounters with Saltwater, I was already familiar with the company, which made the step toward an internship here a logical choice.

During my internship, I worked on a graduation project focused on designing an autonomous inspection vessel for subsea cables, for example at offshore wind farms. The goal was to investigate how inspections could be carried out more efficiently and quickly using autonomous systems. I started with extensive research, after which I defined requirements and boundary conditions and developed and analyzed various concepts.

What made my internship challenging was the broad scope of the subject. From concept development to technical analyses such as resistance, stability, and vessel motions, you are involved in many different aspects. This required me to work in a structured way and carefully consider design decisions.

Within the team, I quickly felt at home. The atmosphere is open and personal, and it’s easy to connect with colleagues. You’re not just a number but truly part of the team, which makes working here enjoyable.

My graduation project resulted in a complete concept design for an autonomous inspection vessel, including analyses and well-founded decisions. The design demonstrates how inspection processes can be made more efficient and flexible within the growing offshore market.
